The first one is that it reminds us that she actually loved Nuka, even if she was too unstable to show it.
Zira mourning Nuka's death and asking Scar to watch over him is a Tear Jerker for three reasons. Also, when we come back to this scene, there's a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment where she lifts her head back up and opens her eyes with this broken look on her face. Even though they spent most of their scenes bickering, she clearly loved him. She looks just as horrified as Zira when she sees he's about to fall, and when he dies, she just says his name quietly, then bows her head in grief. Vitani's reaction is just as saddening. Keeping in mind Kovu, despite outshining Nuka and earning his constant jealousy, genuinely cared about his brother, being blamed for his death served was quite a gut punch. The consequences given to Kovu, who is disowned by his mother and branded with a villainous scar after she strikes him in fury (even she needs to briefly pause from her fury in disbelief following this imagery). I finally got your attention, didn't I? Didn't I? A Lion King 2 film could lean more into the strengths of the live-action movie that ended up being mixed among audiences.Nuka: *smiles* Well. This brings in room for there to be more action set pieces within the breathtaking world of the Savannah. The sequel is more-so an adventure film that also takes the time to expand its characters. It would be the best of both worlds – we keep the nostalgia for Simba’s Pride fans, but it’s not going to be a shot-for-shot remake either.Īlso, Simba’s Pride is not inherently a Disney musical like The Lion King was. The animated sequel is not seen as a masterpiece like the original is, and therefore there's more wiggle room for a filmmaker to play around with the eye-popping format Favreau championed. If The Lion King 2 was adapted, this problem would dissipate because one’s memory of the material is not as overwrought as the original film. On the one hand, he was creating this photo-realistic world comparable to a nature documentary, and on the other hand, he was recreating the iconic song and dance moments rooted in animation. My main issue with the live-action Lion King movie was I felt there were two conflicting ideas Jon Favreau was exploring.
